Description:
The Leyton House Formula 1 team, born from March Engineering, raced in F1 between 1987 and 1991 under the turquoise Leyton House livery that became instantly recognisable. Designed by the brilliant Adrian Newey, their cars most famously the March 881 and Leyton House CG891/CG901 were among the most advanced aerodynamic packages of the era.
Drivers including Ivan Capelli and Maurcio Gugelmin pushed the cars beyond expectations, often challenging teams with far bigger budgets. The highlight came at the 1990 French Grand Prix, where Capelli led most of the race in the CG901, narrowly missing out on victory to Alain Prosts Ferrari. Despite limited resources, the Leyton House cars gained a reputation for sleek design, technical innovation, and underdog spirit.
Though financial struggles led to the teams collapse in 1991, the legacy lived on Adrian Neweys pioneering aerodynamic philosophy at Leyton House went on to dominate F1 in later decades with Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull Racing. Today, Leyton House cars remain icons of bold design and underdog grit from Formula 1s late 1980s and early 1990s turbo and naturally aspirated eras.
